The Ministry of Education has released the 2025 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) results, and this year’s performance has been encouraging. Out of the 194,584 students who sat for the exams, 113,708 passed, giving a national pass rate of 58.44%.

- Community Day Secondary Schools (CDSS): 53,571 students wrote the exams, and 28,877 passed. That’s a 53.90% pass rate.
- Private Secondary Schools: Out of 46,232 students, 29,738 passed, giving a 64.32% pass rate.
Government Response
Speaking in Lilongwe after the release of the results, Rachel Chimbwete Phiri, the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Education, said the performance shows that the interventions put in place are beginning to pay off.
She explained that while the ministry is pleased with the overall outcome, it will closely examine schools that performed poorly—especially private schools—to understand what went wrong.
On the positive side, the growth in Community Day Secondary Schools is being celebrated as a step forward, thanks to improvements in infrastructure, teaching materials, and support from development partners.
Phiri also emphasized that the government will continue to strengthen interventions in underperforming schools to ensure every student has a fair chance of success.
Last 10 Schools
Not all schools performed well. Here are the ten lowest-performing schools in each category:
Community Day Secondary Schools: Chiunda, Namikombe, Namwanje, Dziwe, Kamwe, Chipyera, Mtown, Edingeni, Mpumbe, and Emchakachakeni.
Private Secondary Schools: Tsogolo Private (Balaka), Dzukani, H&C, Hillside, Love of God, Joy, New Life Academy, Praise, Blessings Foundation, and New Vision 2 (Zomba).
